Chester L. Brown, 100, of Fitzgerald, Georgia died Friday, February 26, 2010, at the Life Care Center in Fitzgerald.
Graveside services will be held 2 P.M. Sunday, February 28, in the Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. B.J. Funk officiating. Susan Hughes will deliver the eulogy. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mr. Brown was born October 22, 1909 in Walden County, Georgia to the late William H. and Mary Doggett Brown and was raised by his step-mother, Mattie Doggett Brown. At the age of three, Mr. Brown and his family moved to Crisp County and then to Ben Hill County in 1913. He was a farmer and a cabinet builder for Standard Supply Company. A faithful member of Central United Methodist Church who was always willing to serve, he was a member of the Carlisle Sunday School Class, a trustee, and the Official Board. He enjoyed helping maintain the church grounds. His hobbies included building swings, benches, chairs, chests and other wood items which he gave to his family and friends.
Mr. Brown is survived by several nieces and nephews including Barbara Ann Pike (Jerry) Dixon, William (Deena) Brown, Harold (Julie) Brown and Alice Fletcher, all of Fitzgerald; Hugh (Betty Jo) Pike of Palm Springs, California, Frances (Stanley) Ray of Roswell, GA, Barbara & Ron Owen of Florida and Pat & Irene Bishop of North Carolina. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Pike Brown, 5 brothers and 3 sisters.
