Harry N. "Papa" Byers, Jr., 85, of Derry, NH, died Sunday, February 21, 2010 in the Concord Hospital in Concord, NH. Mr. Byers was born in Chambersburg, PA on March 31, 1924, a son of the late Harry N. and Gertrude (Wolfe) Byers, Sr. He was a resident of Derry for the past year, formerly living in Groveton, NH and Methuen, MA. Mr. Byers was a US Navy WWII veteran serving on the USS Lexington. He was employed by Malden Mills in Lawrence, MA for 42 years, retiring as a stockroom supervisor. Mr. Byers was a member of the VFW Post #6808 in Lancaster, NH and the American Legion Post #17 in Groveton, NH.
He is survived by two sons, Harry N. Byers, III and wife Ann of Newton, NH, and Paul Byers and wife Jean of Derry; one daughter, Rita Byers-Downey and husband Donald of Sandown, NH; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; as well as four brothers and two sisters. He was predeceased by his wife, Pauline (Ricci) Byers in 1999, and a son, Raymond Byers.
There are no calling hours. A graveside service was held on Thursday, February 25th at 10:30am in the Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Assoc., 1301 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Ste. 800, Washington, DC 20004. The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry is handling the arrangements.
