Obituary

Hanson – Russell W. “Russ” Stone 89 died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday February 15. He was the beloved husband for 62 years of Elizabeth (Fish) Stone. He and his wife resided in Hanson for 61 years where they raised their four daughters.

Born in Lawrence and raised in Methuen he was the son of the late Howard and Beatrice (Hill) Stone. He was a graduate of the Essex Agricultural School and later attended the School of Practical Arts in Boston. He worked for the Patriot Ledger Newspaper as a Compositor for over 40 years.

Russ was a proud veteran of the US Marines having served during WWII from 1942 to 1945 and participated in actions against enemy forces in the Consolidation of the Northern Solomon Islands, and later in Guam, Okinawa and others. He was a member of the VFW of Abington and a member of the Puritan Masonic Lodge for over 50 years.

Russ enjoyed animals and gardening, he was an accomplished artist and was a talented woodworker and handyman, but his greatest joy came from the time spent with his family. He was a loyal fan of the many events of his daughters, and his grandchildren.

For over 50 years he was a summer resident of Saquish and he along with his wife Elizabeth, built a cottage where he and his family spent many summer days enjoying the beach and ocean.

In addition to his wife Elizabeth he is survived by his daughters Priscilla Moore of Bridgewater, Pamela Daley and her husband Peter of Hanson, Nancy Nevens of Raynham, and Jennifer Bilunas and her husband James of East Bridgewater, his brothers Howard and Charles Albert Stone both of NH. He is also survived by his 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral service will be held Friday February 19 at 11 AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman. Burial will follow in the Fern Hill Cemetery, Hanson. Visiting hours will be held Thursday February 18 from 5 – 8 PM with a Masonic Service beginning at 7 PM. Donations in his name may be made to the Gurnet-Saquish Corp. Box 245A, Duxbury, MA 02331
