Obituary

Edward H. Wheelden, 65, of New Bedford died October 1, 2003 at New Bedford Healthcare Center after a long illness.

He was the husband of Joan M. (Dias) Wheelden, and son of the late George C. and Aldea (Turgeon) Wheelden.

Mr. Wheelden was born in New Bedford and had lived in New Bedford for all of his life. He was a graduate of New Bedford Vocational High School where he was a member of the football and baseball teams.

He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.

He was formerly employed as a supervisor at J.C. Rhodes for many years until his retirement. In his retirement, he was employed at the Buttonwood Senior Center.

Mr. Wheelden played basketball for St. Kilian Church and semiprofessional football for the Murphy Club. He was active in the New Bedford High School Gridiron Club and coached Pee Wee football for the South End Youth Atheletic Association.

He served in the US Navy.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Christopher Wheelden and his wife Lisa, of New Bedford; a daughter, Jennifer Paine and her husband Fred, of South Dartmouth; a sister, Shirley Shanahan of Virginia; a brother-in-law, Ronald Dias, and his wife Brenda, of South Dartmouth; 4 grandchildren, Connor Wheelden and Hannah Wheelden, both of New Bedford, and Benjamin Paine and Nicholas Paine, both of South Dartmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordFriday, Friday October 3rd at 9 AM.Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Visiting hours Thursday, October 2nd from 4-8 PM.

Interment St. John's Cemetery.
