NORTH ANDOVER – Mrs. Virginia M. (Roberts) Sumberg, 92, passed away on February 12, 2010, at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House in Haverhill surrounded by her family.
She was born in Detroit, Michigan, on August 2, 1917, and graduated from Marygrove College. She worked for several years during the war before marrying Robert P. Sumberg. They moved to Reading, Massachusetts, in 1956, where they raised their eight children. In 1976 they relocated to Bradford, Massachusetts, where they lived until Bob’s death in 1995. She then lived in Andover for 10 years before moving to Ashland Farms in North Andover.
Virginia dedicated her life to her family and friends. In addition, she was an active member of her church and volunteered her time for a number of organizations including the Reading Public Schools, the Andover Senior Center, and the Andover Thrift Shop. She read avidly, enjoyed crossword puzzles, loved traveling, and delighted in the natural world. Her family will greatly miss her sense of humor, her good nature, her love, and her attention to the beauty around her.
Virginia is survived by her eight children: Dick, Jack, Mary Lou, Connie, Jim, Kate, Tissy, and Bobbie; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on February 19 at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine’s in Andover, followed by a reception for family and friends.
