Obituary

Marie B. Strickland, 91, of 425 Drozdyk Drive, died Sunday at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital with her family by her side.

Marie was born April 7, 1912 the daughter of Arthur J. and Mae (Stanner) Brennan. She graduated from Williams Memorial Institute in 1930 and received her teaching certificate from State Normal School in 1933.

She taught in the Groton School system for 40 years, retiring in 1975. Marie received her Bachelors in Teaching from Willimantic teachers College in 1963. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Assoc., and the AARP. She was also a communicant of St. Patrick Church, Mystic. She also an avid reader and enjoyed travelling throughout the US, with particular interest in historic sites and national parks.

She married James L. Strickland on August 3, 1936 at Sacred Heart Church in Groton. Together, they lived in the Mystic & Groton area before Mr. Strickland died in 1960. Marie is survived by her son, James L. Strickland of Groton, a daughter, Ann M. Ross and her husband Joseph B. Ross of St. James City, Fla., 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick Church, East Main Street, Mystic on Saturday at 10am. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New London. Visitation is private for the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Patrick Church, Mystic 06355 or a charity of the donor's choice.
