Richmond A. Melcher, 86

Richmond A. “Dick” Melcher, 86, of Mansfield formerly of Wells, Maine and Attleboro passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving family on Friday February 5, 2010 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of the late Annie A. (Stewart) Melcher to whom he was wed for 45 years at the time of her death on July 13, 2004.
Born in Easton, New Hampshire on August 3, 1923 he was a son of the late Richard and Jessie (Hall) Melcher.
He grew up in Bridgton, Maine and was educated in Bridgton schools. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Force during WWII and was honorably discharged on September 28, 1945 with the rank of Private First Class.
A retired toolmaker, Mr. Melcher had been employed for 39 years at the Swank Manufacturing Company in Attleboro prior to retiring.
When younger Dick was very proud of his achievements, especially the fact of building his own home in Attleboro where he raised his family. He was also a former private pilot and was the owner of his own airplane which he kept at the Mansfield Municipal Airport.
Mr. Melcher enjoyed dancing and was a graduate of the former Arthur Murray School of Dancing. He was a stickler for physical fitness and maintained a healthy life style by exercising daily which included bicycling.
A resident of Mansfield for the past 5 years he had formerly lived in Wells, Maine for 20 years, moving there from Attleboro where he resided for nearly 20 years.
He is survived by his devoted children Stewart A. Melcher and his wife Angie of Fort Myers, Florida and Jessie E. Brown and her husband Michael of Cumberland, Rhode Island. He was the dear brother of Ruth Tracy of Tampa, Florida and is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Jason Melcher of Fort Myers, Florida, Aaron Melcher and his wife Toni of Somerville, Alex Melcher of Revere and Henry Brown of Cumberland, RI., as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Tuesday February 9th from 5-7 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 7:00 P.M. at the conclusion of visiting hours at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home. Burial will be held at a later date in the Spring Brook Cemetery, Mansfield.
In lieu of flowers, Mr. Melcher’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Women and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island 101 Dudley St. Providence, Rhode Island 02905
