Virginia V. “Ginny” (Bowen) Phillips, 92, of Norton formerly of Mansfield, East Sandwich and Attleboro passed away peacefully on Tuesday February 2, 2010 at home. She was the wife of the late Clifton H. “Tut” Phillips who died on December 7, 1991.
Born in Attleboro, MA on January 26, 1918 she was the youngest child of the late Terrance and Verna (Ellis) Bowen.
Ginny grew up in Attleboro, was educated in Attleboro Public Schools and was a 1936 graduate of Attleboro High School where she served in the Debating Club and Band during her freshman year.
Ginny was married to her late husband on April 12, 1941 at the home of her parents in Attleboro by the Rev. Willard Roots of Mansfield. At the time of Mr. Phillips death the couple had been wed for 50 years.
Mrs. Phillips was a telephone operator for New England T&T in Attleboro and enjoyed reminiscing about working the day the Great Storm hit “the 1938 hurricane.” During WWII Ginny also worked as a spare operator at the Mansfield switchboard and the switchboard at the Foxboro Co.
When her children were older she went to work at the Foxboro Company and was a member of the 10 Year Club. Ginny also worked for the former Diano Co. of Mansfield, retiring from Sweet Manufacturing as an inventory control specialist.
She was a former member of the ladies auxiliary of the Bourne V.F.W. and the Sandwich American legion, as well as the Girl Scouts and Girl Scout Mariners.
Ginny enjoyed knitting & crocheting and professional football, her favorite teams being the Green Bay Packers, the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots. Another favorite past time was camping.
Mrs. Phillips and her husband lived in Mansfield for 40 years before retiring to East Sandwich, then moving to Waltham, Maine. Several years after her husband passed away she returned to Mansfield.
Her family wishes to thank Hospice in Attleboro for all the support and care shown to them during the past few months.
She is survived by her two children Janet V. (Phillips) Conway of Torrington, CT and Clifton H. Phillips, III and his wife Cindy of Norton. She is also survived by five grandchildren Lorraine, Michael, Sean, Jennifer and Nicholas, six great grandchildren Liam, Juliana, Brandon, Haylie, Emilia and Hayden and many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. Mrs. Phillips was pre deceased by her siblings Gladys (Bowen) Pickering and Ralph Bowen.
A memorial service, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Saturday February 13th at 2:00 P.M. in the Club House at Willow Crossing 25 Cobb St. Mansfield.
Following the memorial services a time of visitation and refreshments will be held till 5:00 P.M. in the club house.
