Fr. Henry Mair, SA, a Franciscan Friar of the Atonement, in Brockton, died January 28, 2010 at the age of 74. Fr. Henry was born Gerard Mair in Brooklyn, NY. He attended PS 123 and St. Brigid’s Elementary School and then Bishop Loughlin High School, Brooklyn, where he graduated in 1953. He entered the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement in 1953. He entered Novitiate in 1955, where he received the name Henry, and professed his first vow in 1956. He then studied philosophy at the friars’ college in Saranac Lake, NY and theology in Washington, DC and was ordained a Roman Catholic priest on June 7, 1962 at Graymoor by Francis Cardinal Spellman.
Fr. Henry was then assigned to the friars ministry in Japan, where he ministered in Yokohama and Kawasaki for 27 years. He returned to Graymoor where he was Associate Novice Director. He then spent eight years ministering in Seaside and Los Angeles, CA. In 2001 he was assigned to the Chapel of Our Savior, Brockton, where he worked until his death.
Fr. Henry was the son of the late Harry Mair and Caroline (Seubert) Mair, both of Brooklyn, NY. He is survived by his sister Bernadette Scholl of Las Vegas, NV. He was the brother of the late Harry Mair, Jr.
A Mass for the repose of his soul will be held at the Chapel of Our Savior, 475 Westgate Dr. Brockton on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 7:00pm. His cremated remains will then be taken to Graymoor where there will be a Wake in Little Flower Chapel on Thursday, February 4 at 7:30pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, February 5 at 10:00am followed by internment in the Friars’ Cemetery.
