Antonio "Anthony" Calledare
...Stone sculptor; 99
TEWKSBURY - Antonio "Anthony" Calledare, age 99, known to many as the "strong man with the straw hat" died peacefully, Wednesday evening, Jan. 27, at Saints Medical Center in Lowell, surrounded by his devoted family. He was the husband of the late Mary (Bianco) Calladare, who died in 1983.
He was born in Gloucester, on March 22, 1910, a son of the late Michael and Virginia (DeMarco) Calledare. He was a lifelong resident of Tewksbury. During WWII, he worked at the former Charlestown Navy Yard, and at the close of the war became a stone cutter for the T.H. McVey Monument Works in Watertown. "Tony" as he was often called, retired but continued to sculpt in various media. His family described his talent for bringing beauty to life with his hands as simply amazing.
He is survived by three children, Richard Calledare of Chester, NH, Gail Wilkins and her husband Roy of Gloucester, and Jane Calledare, his primary care giver, with whom he resided in Tewksbury; his friend and care giver, Michael Bastien; five grandchildren, Richard "Ricky" Calledare of Winter Springs, FL, Mark Calledare of Chester, NH, Michael Calledare of Manchester, NH; Gail Saunders of Andover, MA, A. John "Tony" Flynn of Randolph; six great grandchildren; Branden, Vincent, Danny, Nicholas, Haley, and Brian; one great great granddaughter, Zowey; a sister, Rena Laughlin of Gloucester; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lucy and Tom Cirace of Lynfield; and many nieces and nephews.
Committal Prayers were offered on Friday morning, Jan. 29, at the Mausoleum Chapel at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, MA. Memorials to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701 will be appreciated.
