TEWKSBURY, MA/ WINDSOR,NH: William Edmond Chartier, Sr., age 79, a resident of Windsor, NH for the past 9 years, formerly of Tewksbury, passed away on Friday, January 22, 2010 at the Manchester V.A. Hospital in Manchester, NH.
He was the husband of Judith R. (Treadwell) Chartier, who passed away on January 10, 2002.
Born in Billerica on October 25, 1930, he was the son of the late Joseph Victor Chartier and the late Marie J. (Poirre) Chartier.
Mr. Chartier was raised in the Wamesit area of Tewksbury and attended Tewksbury schools.
In 1953, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War with the 61st Infantry Battalion.
He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his military service.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a heavy equipment operator by the J.E. Farmer Construction Company of Billerica, where he worked for 15 years.
He resided in Limestone, ME until moving to Windsor, NH in 2001.
Mr. Chartier enjoyed fishing, playing his guitar and country music.
He is survived by four sons, William E. Chartier, Jr. and his wife Mary of Billerica, Richard A. Chartier of Haverhill, Joseph V. Chartier and his wife Dorothy of Concord, NH, and Stephen M. Chartier and his wife Robin of Pelham, NH; two brothers, Gerard R. "Gerry" Chartier of Tennessee and Victor N. "Sonny" Chartier of Londonderry, NH; six sisters, Rose E. "Rosie" Caisse of Lowell, Shirley V. Carr of Milford, NH, Jeanne Arpin of Windsor, NH, Eva D. "Dolly" Gigutre of Florida, Jeannette "Tootsie" Sarmento of Chelmsford and Evangeline "Margie" Arpin of Windsor, NH; numerous grandchildren; two great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Chartier was the father of the late Dana, Michael, Gregory, and Judith Chartier and brother of the late Paul Chartier and Rita "Jackie" Ashe.
Calling hours Thursday, Jan. 28th, 5-7 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home , 16 Lee St., Tewksbury, followed by a Memorial Prayer Service to be held at the funeral home.
