LOWELL—William F. Liston, 79 years old, died Monday morning at the Boston University Medical Center, in Boston, after a long illness. He was the husband of Monica M. (O’Neill) Liston, who survives him.
He was born in Lowell, on November 20, 1923, a son of the late William F. and Katherine (Fuller) Liston, and was a graduate of the Oakland Grammar School, Moody Junior High School and Lowell High School, Class of 1941.
Mr. Liston served as an Infantryman in the United States Army directly after High School. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, (C.I.B.), the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with three Bronze Battle Stars, Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. In 1997, he received the Bronze Star from Congressman Marty Meehan, fifty years after his years of service.
Mr. Liston was employed as the Personnel Director for the City of Lowell, for 26 years until his retirement in 1991. He was a life member of the Lowell Elks Club and a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Mr. Liston was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church.
Surviving him besides his wife of 48 years, are four children: William F. Liston, of Los Angeles, CA; Kevin J. and his wife Denise M. Liston, of Hudson, NH; Kathleen M. Liston, of San Francisco, CA; and Brian R. Liston, and his fiancé Stacey A. Murphy, of Brookline, NH; two grandchildren: Jennifer A. Liston, a student at the University of Miami; Christopher J. Liston, of Hudson, NH; also many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Robert E. Liston, who died in May of 2000.
Friends may call Thursday, September 25th, from 4 to 8 PM at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, (Rte. 38). His Funeral Mass to be offered Friday morning, September 26th, at 10:30 AM at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell.
