Obituary

Polk Johnson Davis, Jr., 81, Clarksville, died entered eternal life Wednesday, January 20, 2010, at xxxxxxx. The funeral will be held at A celebration of his life will take place Saturday at 2 pm at Antioch United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Welchance and Rev. Steve Louder officiating. Burial will be in Antioch United Methodist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 pm Friday at the funeral home. Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born July 7, 1928, in Birmingham, AL, second child of the late Polk Johnson Davis and Eva Lorene Davis. He grew up on a farm in Hackberry Community in Montgomery County, TN and attended Hackberry Elementary and Montgomery Central High School. He is also preceded in death by two siblings, Barbara Davis Carper and John H. Davis. Mr. Davis attended Locust Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church from childhood, accepting Christ as his Savior and became a member in 1942. He transferred membership to Antioch United Methodist Church, where he served in various ways including Sunday school teacher. As a certified Lay speaker he served with Lay Witness Missions to several churches both in Tennessee and surrounding states. 4-H became an important part of his life as he took part in local events and projects. Highlights were 4-H Roundup in Knoxville where he received Vol-State award for achievement and earned a trip to Chicago, IL to National Congress. He was also a charter member of Middle TN 4-H All-Stars, an honor based on character, leadership, and community service, as well as 4-H projects. Having been interested in agriculture all his years Mr. Davis was a Farm Bureau member and served on the Board of Directors for Montgomery County since 2003. Mr. Davis spent several years working on Montgomery County Farms operating a bulldozer with Cecil Morgan Construction Company. During Morgan's road building years, Mr. Davis became a heavy equipment operator, mechanic, and shop foreman. Later he was employed by several local construction companies. Projects he worked with include the TVA Cumberland City Steam Plant, several golf courses, and JMZ Zinc Plant. After construction he was employed by and retired from the Zinc plant now known as Nyrstar Zinc. He especially enjoyed working with young apprentice mechanics. He taught them good work ethics and tried to instill in them his personal motto, "always try and never say I can't". He is survived by his wife of over 57 years, Barbara Ussery Davis, two sons, a daughter and five grandchildren: Randall P. Davis and his children Tara E. Davis and R.J. Davis; Richard V. Davis and wife, special daughter, Carmela J. Davis and their children, Jamie L. Shockley (Donnie), Jason R. Davis and Jenny A. Davis. Also surviving are eleven siblings including sisters, Earlene (William) Lewis, Faye (Bill) Couts, Rachel Yarbrough, Mary (Burr) Francis, and Linda (Charles) Bumpus. Surviving brothers include Billy (Alice), Frank (Barbara), David (Linda), Phillip (Marty), Steve, and Mickey (Mary) Davis. Thelma Kelley and Leroy Davis, maternal aunt and uncle are survivors. A host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends join in love for Mr. Davis. Serving as pallbearers will be Randall Davis, Richard Davis, Jason Davis, David Davis, Phillip Davis, and Steve Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Davis, Frank Davis, Mickey Davis, Vernon Ussery, Jr., and Laurin L. Ussery.
