WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Capt. Richard Ross Hay, 94, a retired Navy veteran, died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003. He was the husband of Norma Helen Crapo Hay; they were married 69 years.
Born and raised in Scituate, Mass., he was the son of the late Emma Corey and Wilfred G. Hay. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1931 and was a World War II Navy veteran serving on the USS Marblehead and USS Guam among many ships.
He was a member of the U.S. Naval Institute, American Radio Relay League, Quarter Century Wireless Association, U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and the SouthEastern Massachusetts Amateur Radio Society.
Mr. Hay was involved in amateur theater in Wilton, Conn., and South Dartmouth, Mass., as a lighting technician and occasional actor. He was also an avid amateur radio operator with the call sign WILE. He was an active member of the Congregational Church of South Dartmouth and the Community Church of Poway, Calif.
Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Susan Johnson and her husband, Terry, of West Columbia; two grandchildren, Debra Prosser and her husband, Dr. Verne Prosser, of San Antonio, Texas, and Gregory Johnson of West Columbia; and a great-granddaughter, Katherine Grace Prosser of San Antonio.
His memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday Sept. 26, 2003 in the Congregational Church of South Dartmouth. Burial in South Dartmouth Cemetery is private.
