Plymouth – Robert C. Scott 92, formerly a 36 year resident of Hanson, died Friday January 15 after a period of failing health. He was the husband of the late Jane A. (Buffum) Scott and the late Marion L. (Browne) (Smith) Scott.
Born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in New Jersey, he was the son of the late Harry S. and C. Augusta (Furman) Scott. He attended Montclair Academy and East Orange High School both in New Jersey and was a graduate of Upsala College in East Orange, NJ Class of 1939. He worked as an underwriter for the Atlantic Company before his retirement in 1981.
Robert was proud a veteran of World War II having served in the US Army Air Corp from 1943-1945 as a member of the 410th Fighter Squadron. He was awarded six Bronze Service Stars for his participation in the Normandy campaign, the Northern France campaign, the Rhineland campaign and others.
He was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Hanson for 17 years, and a member of the Boy Scouts and served as Scout Master for 7 years. He also volunteered in the Hanson Public Library and the Whitman-Hanson High School library repairing books. He was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Hanover, where he sang in the choir.
He is survived by his children David A. Scott of Hopatcong, NJ, Richard C. Scott of New York City, Douglas R. Scott of Bridgeport, CT, and Ellen F. Gillis of Kingston, his stepchildren David R. Smith of Medford, OR, Donald E. Smith of Mt. Arlington, NJ, Kathy S. Lee of Barrington, RI and June E. Smith of Del Haven, NJ. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
His memorial service will be held Friday January 22 at 9 AM in the First Congregational Church, 515 Hanover Street, Hanover. Burial will take place following the service at 11:30 AM in the MA Veteran’s Cemetery, Bourne. Calling hours are omitted by request of the family.
