Obituary

Loren William Mooney, of North Stonington, passed away peacefully at his home on January 14, 2010. Born in Wheeling, West Virginia on October 3, 1932, Bill was the eldest of four children.

Bill is survived by his wife Dee,; a daughter Darlene; his son Dean and wife Lydia; his grandchildren, Jaden and Sage; a sister Barbara, and brothers Bob and George. Bill was a devoted husband, father and Grandfather who took great pride in attending his grandchildren’s baseball games, soccer and dance recitals. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Jack Stefanski.

He was very athletic growing up, loved sports his entire life, especially the Giants, New York Yankees, UCONN Basketball, and last but certainly not least, his golf.

He distinguished himself in service to his country of which he served 46 years; 22 years active duty Navy. Bill was awarded several distinguished military medals throughout his military career, especially for his tour in the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Navy, Bill pursued a career in medical research as a physiologist working for the Government and supporting the submarine community at the Submarine Base, New London, CT.

Bill spent his retired years as an avid golfer, golfing as often as several times a week, and was a long time member of Southern New England Golfers Association. He shared a passion of love for antiques with his wife Dee so much that he became a local appraiser and consultant for friends and local antique dealers. He also loved to entertain at his pool and had a cultured passion for Broadway shows and Symphonies at Tanglewood. Gardening was another passion for him, as he looked forward to Spring every year. Bill was also a familiar face as an assistant at Dinoto Funeral Home.

He always had a smile on his face, a chuckle in his laugh, twinkle in his eye, love in his heart and a kind word for everyone. He was a constant source of compassion, goodness, strength, and forgiveness and will be dearly missed by his family and numerous friends.

Bill's family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Monday from 4-7pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Liberty St., Pawcatuck on Tuesday at 10am, followed by presentation of military honors.
