Meriam "Mimi" Elyse McDonald Hammond, 71, of Fort Mill, South Carolina, died Monday, January 11, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Funeral services will be held 2 P.M., Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with Dr. Mike Ruffin officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until the funeral hour.
Mrs. Hammond was born September 8, 1938 in Fitzgerald, the only child of the late John Willis McDonald and Elyse Gorday McDonald Segraves. Mrs. Hammond graduated from Fitzgerald High School in 1956 and from the University Of Georgia with a B.A. degree in 1960. She lived in Miami Lakes, Florida for 46 years where she was active in social and charitable activities. She served on the Board of Trustees and as Guild President for the Miami Museum of Science and Space Transit Planetarium, as National Heart Sunday Chairperson for the American Heart Association, and was the Co-Chairperson of the Orange Bowl Luncheon for many years. She also worked as a Medical Secretary before moving to Fort Mill, SC in 2007 to be near her only son. An avid bridge player throughout her life, she was most recently a member of the Baxter Village Friday Afternoon Bridge Club.
She is survived by her husband: Richard H. “Bud” Hammond, Jr., son and daughter-in-law: Rick and Lisa Hammond and a granddaughter: Lindsay Elyse Hammond, all of Charlotte, NC.
