Carol H. Carey (Hovenden) age 67 of Canton, formerly of Westwood passed away January 8th, 2010 at the Tippett Home in Needham after a 6 month battle with brain cancer. Born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, Canada she attended St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in Montreal, graduating in the class of 1964. She worked as a Nurse for over 45 years; employed at the Faulkner Hospital for 30 years; the last 24 in the Substance Abuse Unit. She was a certified addiction counselor (CAC) and certified chemical dependency nurse. She was a member of the Massachusetts Nursing Association (MNA) and an active participant in the Annual Cape Cod Symposium on Addictive Disorders. She was the 2004 recipient of the MNA Excellence in Nursing Practice Award and the CASA (Community Association Serving Alcoholism) Nurse Recognition Award. She was passionate about providing peer assistance for health care workers with chemical dependencies. She has lived in Canton for the last 5 years and previously lived in Westwood for 33 years. Beloved wife of Frederick T. Mother of Tara H. Carey of Littleton & Sean F. Carey of Moretown, VT. Sister of Wendy Hovenden Meletis (sister-in-law of Fanis Meletis) & Nancy Hovenden Harris (sister-in-law of Paul Harris, deceased) both of Ontario & Frank Hovenden (sister-in-law of Krista Kaptein) of British Columbia. Predeceased by parents Laura and Thomas Hovenden of Quebec and brother David Hovenden of Reading, Vermont. Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home 455 Washington St. Canton Friday 4-8pm. Memorial Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church Canton Saturday morning at 10:30. Burial private.
