Obituary

Handy --- Ernest J., Sr., formerly of West Roxbury, Roslindale, and the South End, born August 23, 1919, to Joseph and Smayia Handy, attended Cathedral High School and Boston College. Following combat service in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps, Ernie married Helen M. Shea and attended Boston College Law School, from which he graduated in 1949. Ernie spent 25 years in private law practice, was admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court, and served as an Assistant Clerk Magistrate for the Suffolk Superior Criminal Court, retiring in 1987. Ernie was a loyal “Double Eagle” who held B.C. football season tickets for over 50 years and served as 1942 B.C. class correspondent for over 60 years. He also served as head basketball and football coach at Cathedral High School from 1949 to 1954. Ernie retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserves, Judge Advocate General’s Corps, with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Beloved husband of the late Helen (Shea) Handy. Loving father of Elaine Kiley of Jamaica Plain, Nancy McLaughlin and her late husband Michael of Darien, Conn., Ernest J. Handy Jr. and his wife Susan of Walpole, Elizabeth Senese and her husband Alfred of Goffstown, N.H., Joanne Summers and her husband James of Wrentham, and the late Mary-Bernadette Handy and her late fiancé William Spears. Loving grandfather of Amy Kiley and her husband Christopher Anderson, Rebecca Kiley and her husband Matthew Cregor, Thomas Kiley and his fiancée Caitlin Helfrich, Meghann Dockum and her husband Christian, Missy, Erin and Michael (Jr.) McLaughlin, Grace Handy, Mary and Jack Summers. Adoring great-grandfather of Ella Shea Dockum and Kevin Kiley Anderson. Devoted brother of Josephine Heimler and the late Dr. Edward Handy. Also survived by dozens of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral from the Robert J. Lawler and Crosby Funeral Home, 1803 Centre St., West Roxbury on Wednesday, Jan. 13th at 9:00am. A funeral service will be celebrated at Our Lady of Annunciation Cathedral, 7 VFW Pkwy, Roslindale, at 10:30am. Visiting hours Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00pm. Interment at St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury.
