William Bancroft, 73, of Mattapoisett died Thursday September 18, 2003 unexpectedly at home. He was the husband of Jeanne (Sadeck) Bancroft; they had been married for 51 years.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Arthur D. and Theresa V. (Murray) Bancroft, he lived in New Bedford for many years before moving to Mattapoisett in 1975.
He was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, where he was a member of the choir and the Parish Council.
Mr. Bancroft was employed as a sales representative for Roy Tailor Company in Ohio. He was formerly employed as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in New Bedford.
Mr. Bancroft was a member of the Holy Name Couples Club and a Past President of the National Association of Letter Carriers. Active in town affairs, he served on the Mattapoisett Bike Path Committee and the Sewer Study Committee. He was the recipient of the Marian Medal from the Diocese of Fall River. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
His greatest loves in life were his devoted family and faithful friends.
Survivors include his wife; 4 daughters, Colleen Gordon and her husband Herbert, and Kathleen Tavares and her husband Anthony, all of Fairhaven, Debra Kershaw and her husband John of Marion, and Joyce Lavoie and her husband Regis of Mattapoisett; a son, Daniel Bancroft and his wife Cheryl of Oviedo, Florida; 6 brothers, Arthur D. Bancroft, Jr. of Portsmouth, RI, Robert C. Bancroft of West Barnstable, J. Richard Bancroft of Lakeville, David A. Bancroft of Mattapoisett, John S. Bancroft of North Dartmouth, and James G. Bancroft of Somerset; 17 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late Paul F. Bancroft.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd., Route 6, Mattapoisett, Monday September 22, 2003 at 9:30 AM.Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 121 Mount Pleasant St., New Bedford at 11 AM. Visiting hours will be on Sunday Septemebr 21, 2003 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Burial with Military Honors will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New Bedford.Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
