Harry L. Monk, 93 of Whitman died January 7th, after a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of 46 years to Evelyn R. (Robbins) (Calhoon) Monk.
Born in 1916 to the late Harold and Grace (Addicott) Monk of Rockland .He was a lifelong resident of that town, and of Pembroke, before moving to Whitman in 1963.He worked for the Whitman DPW as foreman of the Park & Tree Division, until his retirement in 1979.
He was a member of the Tree Warden’s Assoc. of MA., a past member of the Pembroke Grange and a charter member of the Pembroke Historical Assoc., where his personal collection of Native- American artifacts remain permanently displayed.
He was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist and a volunteer nature – guide for local chapters of Boys Scouts and Camp Fire Girls. In retirement, he became a skilled carver of shorebirds and waterfowl, with much of his work being featured in the League of N.H. Craftsmen shops for over twenty years and sold around the world.
In addition to his wife Evelyn, he is survived by three daughters, Sylvia Fernandes of Sharpsburg, NC, Vivian Belanger of Pembroke and Janet Fossel of TN., also leaves 3 granddaughters, Leslie Jameson of Dedham, Amanda Macdonald of CO., and Elizabeth Fernandes of FL., 8 grandsons; John, Jason and Justin Belanger, Michael, Mitchell, Mark, Martin and Max Johnson; also 3 great – grandsons; Michael, Matthew and Derek Johnson.
He is beloved and honored by three step-children; Lorraine M. Arguin and her husband of Taunton, Laura L. Richter and her husband William of Hanson and John C. Calhoon and his wife Denise of Bridgewater, VA. He will be sadly missed by his step-grandsons; Jonathan R. and Adam C. Richter of Hanson, Adrien J. Arguin of Taunton, his step-granddaughters, Jessica A. Long, Colleen R. and Heather M. Calhoon all of Bridgewater, VA.
