Elmer L. Layman, 78, passed away at the St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton on January 6th, 2010. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas on January 16th, 1931 to his parents Edward and Helen (Connor) Layman. Elmer was raised and educated in Texas. He served his country honorably during the Korean War as a navigator for the United States Air Force. He remained in active duty until 1957, retiring as a Captain. Elmer received his bachelor’s degree from Boston University. For many years, he was employed as a physics researcher at Hanscom Air Force Base. He also worked as a computer processer and analyst for the Massachusetts Hospital Association in Burlington and for the Honeywell Corporation. Elmer and his wife Noreen have been residents of Brighton for over 35 years. He has member of the Irish American Association in Malden for many years. Elmer is the beloved husband of Noreen (Finnegan) Layman; the dear brother of Dee Layman of Mississippi, Patricia Atkins of Florida and the late Lee, Edward and William Layman; and the brother-in-law of Mary Fitzpatrick of Medford, Cathleen Goselin-Costa of Quincy, Larry Finnegan of Florida, Sally Manley of Ireland and the late Patrick & Sean Finnegan. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and grandnephews. Relatives & friends are invited to attend his funeral from the Breslin Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden on Monday January 11th at 9 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Medford at 11 AM. Services will conclude with interment in St. Patrick Cemetery in Stoneham. Visitation will be held prior to the Mass on Monday only.
