The Rev. Edward Doyle Chatham, 96, Clarksville, died Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at Clarksville Nursing and Rehab Center. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday January 11, in the chapel at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home, Clarksville, with the Rev. Dr. Roger Freeman. officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville. Visitation will be from 11 a..m. until the hour of the service Monday at the funeral home. A second service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Inglewood Baptist Church, Nashville, TN with the Rev Dr. Kevin Shrum and the Rev. Dr. James Chatham officiating. Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. He was born in Louisville, KY but moved to Nashville, TN at the age of ten. He was educated in Louisville and Nashville elementary schools; Davidson County Central High School (class of 1930); Business Training Institute and Southern School of Printing, Nashville; Texas Wesleyan College and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, TX, He served Baptist churches in Tennessee, Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina as Minister of Education and Music, including Nashville churches, Inglewood Baptist, Immanuel Baptist and Grandview Baptist. Since moving to Clarksville in 2004, he had been a member of First Baptist Church there and frequent participant at Trinity Episcopal Church, where his daughter is associate rector.
During WWII, Mr. Chatham served in England, France, Luxembough and Germany in Medical Supply fo the 3rd U.S.Army. He also served for fifteen years as Clerk of the Nashville Baptist Association and as consultant for the Southern Baptist Sunday School Board after retiring from full time ministry. Mr. Chatman is survived by one daughter, The Rev. Dorothy Chatham Hartzog of Clarksville; a granddaughter, April Hollis (Holli) Hartzog of North Carolina; and a niece, Ann Pierce Shepherd (Jim) of California. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Josephine Johnson Chatham; his parents, Edward and Wynne Mai Chatham; his sister, Dorothy Chatham Pierce; and a granddaughter, Angela Hartzog. Memorial gifts may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, Clarksville; First Baptist Church, Clarksville; or to Inglewood Baptist Church, Nashville.
