James A. Campbell, M.D., 67, of Cordele, died Monday, January 4, 2010 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 11 A.M., Thursday, January 7, 2010, at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald with Dr. Lloyd Stembridge and Rev. Rick Hamilton officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday morning from 9:30 until the funeral hour at the funeral home.
Dr. Campbell was born April 6, 1942 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Andrew Jackson and Mary DeVore Campbell. Dr. Campbell graduated from Toccoa Falls High School, Georgia State University and the Medical College of Georgia. He also received a Master’s degree in music from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. Dr. Campbell practiced medicine from 1973 until 1978 in Memphis, TN and from 1978 until 1992 in Fitzgerald and Ashburn. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. Dr. Campbell was a member and former Sunday school teacher at Arbor Baptist Church in Fitzgerald. He played the organ for St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Fitzgerald, sang with the Sons Of Jubal gospel group and enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables to share with his family and friends. Dr. Campbell was a former member of the Fitzgerald Rotary Club
He is survived by his wife: Cecilia Stone Campbell of Lake Blackshear in Cordele; daughter: Emily Campbell of New York, NY; sister & brother-in-law: Catherine & George Pierce of Nashville, TN; brother: Thomas Campbell of Nashville, TN; nephew: Wesley Campbell of Nashville, TN; sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Glenda & Jim McKenzie of Cynthiana, KY; nephew and his wife: Marshall & Kerri McKenzie of Scottsbluff, NE; great nephews: Morgan & Colton McKenzie and nephew and his wife: Scott & Lara McKenzie of Columbus, OH.
