TEWKSBURY - James A. Gallagher Sr., age 86, died Wednesday evening, Sept. 17, at SaintsMemorial Medical Center in Lowell after a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of Julia M.(Carty) Gallagher, with whom he had celebrated a 61st wedding anniversary last week, on Sept.13th.
He was born in East Boston, June 26, 1917, a son of the late Benjamin and Susan (Kelly)Gallagher. He lived in East Boston until moving to Tewksbury in 1953.
During WWII, he enlisted into the U. S. Navy, and served as a Petty Officer First Classthroughout the South Pacific.
He retired from the Boston Navy Yard in 1970, after working as a welder there for three decades.
He was an active member of St. William’s Parish in Tewksbury, was a member of the V.F.W.Post 8164 in Tewksbury, and a huge fan of the Boston Red Sox.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James A. Jr. and his wifeDeborah (Hill) Gallagher of Tewksbury, Paul S. and his wife Diane (Cilibrasi) Gallagher ofNashua; a daughter and son-in-law, Elaine Gallagher-Yost and her husband John Pawelczyk ofWilmington; a sister and brother-in-law, Madeline and her husband John Marcella of Lynn; asister-in-law, Regina Gallagher of Salem; four grandsons, Brian Yost and his wife Christina, Stephen, Michael, andMatthew Gallagher; two great granddaughters, Briana and Julia, and numerous nieces andnephews.
He was also brother of the late Mabel, William, and Henry Gallagher, and Ruth Farnsworth.
His Funeral Mass was held Monday, Sept. 22, in St. William’s Church Interment with Navy Honors was atTewksbury Cemetery.
