John E. Murphy Jr., 85, of Plymouth formerly of Somerville, passed away on December 31st at home. He was the beloved husband of the late Emily (Hungler) Murphy. Father of Karen Mitchell of Plymouth, Jack Murphy and wife Sue of Waco, TX, Maureen Britto and husband Steve of Plymouth, Patrick Murphy and wife Catherine Shetterly of Plymouth, Robin Randlett and husband Rawson of Plymouth and the late Susanna Murphy. Brother of Mildred Waring of PA and Beatrice Mallard of Bourne. He also leaves 9 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by 5 brothers and sisters. Born in Somerville, MA to the late John E. and Bridget Julia (Murphy) Murphy, John graduated from Somerville High School and attended Harvard University. He was the Director of Emergency Services Management and for the City of Somerville for over 40 years. He was a member of the Mass. Association for Contributory Retirement System for 45 years, holding all elected offices and, most recently as their conference planner. He has held a position on the Plymouth Retirement Board for the past 15 years. He was a member of the John Alden Sportsman’s Club, American Legion Post 19 in Somerville, VFW and a charter member of the Moose Club in Plymouth. He enjoyed farming, gardening, camping and politics. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 6th at 9AM from the Richard Davis Funeral Home, 619 State Road (Rte 3A), Plymouth (Manomet) followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Bonaventure’s Church at 10 o’clock. Burial at the Manomet Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Tuesday, Jan. 5th. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made in the name of John E.
