Helen L. McCarron, 78, of Brown Avenue died Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Fatima Hospital. She was the wife of the late James J. McCarron.
Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Raymond P. Walters and Yvonne Walters-Heuser, she lived in Johnston most of her life.
She had been active in civic affairs for most of her life. In 1970, she founded RI Historical Farm, a historic preservation group and was their executive director for 20 years. She was Commissioner of the Johnston Housing Authority from 1973 to 1986; a founding member of the Johnston Democratic Women’s League; Director of the League of Historical Societies for 6 years in the 1980’s; member of the Audubon Society of RI, RI Parks Association, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Coggeshall Farm Association and was former member of Scituate Preservation Society. In recent years, Mrs. McCarron was a private antiques dealer.
She is survived by her son, James O. McCarron of Johnston, her daughter, Diane McCarron and her husband, Victor Diez-Canseco of East Hampton, NY; loving ex-daughter in law, Joanne (Gaudiana) McCarron; five grandchildren; Tara and James McCarron, Alexia Gaudiana and Greg and Chris Barletta, three great grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn Salzillo and two brothers, Raymond P. and Donald T. Walters. She was the sister of the late Marie Read and Richard Walters.
Her funeral will be held Tuesday at 9:30am from the ANDERSON-WINFIELD Funeral Home, Route 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Joseph Church, Danielson Pike, North Scituate. Burial will follow in RI Veterans Cemetery. Visitation Tuesday morning 8:30-9:30 am.
