Methuen, MA – Chanel J. Hamel, 85, died Wednesday December 30, 2009 at the Nevins Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born and educated in Lawrence, Chanel was the former owner of Hamel’s Market for over 40 years, and for more than 20 yrs. was employed at Thwaites Market on Railroad Street in Methuen.
Mr. Hamel was an active communicant of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Methuen. He was also the head usher at church for 60 years, and the hospitality minister. He was a lifetime member of the Lawrence Lodge #65 B.P.O.E. of Elks. He was a former member of the French Social and Naturalization Club of Lawrence, and a member of Methuen Council # 4027 Knights of Columbus. In Methuen Chanel served on the Methuen Water Commission for 10 years and for 15 years on the Methuen Licensing board.
Survivors include his wife of 64 yrs. Barbara (Stacy) Hamel, children Richard Hamel and his wife Pamela of Haverhill, Thomas Hamel and his wife Peggy of Bedford, NH, Deborah Weinhold and her husband Bruce of Methuen, brothers Lionel Hamel of Methuen and John Hamel of Methuen, and sisters Irene and her husband Jack Gamache of Andover, Pauline and her husband Patrick Bissonnette of Salisbury, 4 grandsons Steven and his wife Lisa Hamel, David and his wife Christine Hamel, Michael and his wife Kristen Weinhold and Matthew Weinhold, 4 great-grandchildren; Marie, Margaret, Emily, and Caroline, as well as many nieces and nephews.
ARRANGEMENTS: A Funeral Mass will take place on Monday morning at 11 o’clock in Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish / St. Theresa Church 22 Plymouth Street in Methuen with entombment to follow in St Mary Immaculate Conception Mausoleum.
