Gray, Edward B. M.D. of Wellesley , Massachusetts died at his home on December 30th, 2009 at age 85. He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances, three children, Stephen Gray of Belmont , New Hampshire , Catherine Gray and Carol Gray of Newton , Massachusetts , seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Born in Newton , Dr. Gray attended Noble and Greenough School , Harvard College and Harvard Medical School . He served in the Navy during World War II and as a Captain in the Air Force during the Korean War. Completing his residency at the Peter Bent Brigham (now the Brigham and Women’s Hospital), he was selected for a Harvard Teaching Fellowship and appointed Chief Surgical Resident. Dr. Gray developed a surgical practice on the South Shore while remaining on the staff of the Brigham and Deaconess Hospitals. He established Park Surgical Associates and became the first Chief of Surgery at the Cardinal Cushing Hospital , now the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton . For more than 25 years he taught medical students and residents as Senior Instructor in Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Associate Professor of Surgery at Tufts Medical School . With profound changes in the understanding and treatment of cancer during his professional life, Dr. Gray was appointed to the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, the only organization that accredits cancer programs in hospitals throughout the United States . Eventually he served as Chairman of their Approvals Committee where he oversaw the accreditation of over 1000 hospitals. He was also a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, New England Surgical Society, Boston Surgical Society and other professional groups. In his sixties Dr. Gray became intensely interested in contemplative prayer and its importance in the lives of every day people which he wrote about in his spiritual autobiography, Discovering the Center, published by Paulist Press. Visiting hours will be at the George F. Doherty Funeral Home at 477 Washington Street, Wellesley , MA 02482 on Monday, January 4th from 2-4 and 7-9. A Funeral Mass will be said at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, January 5th at St John the Evangelist Church , 9 Glen Road , Wellesley Hills , MA . A private burial will held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Massachusetts Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown , MA 02472.
