Everett Fincher Matthews, 84, of Tifton died Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at Tift Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 2, 2010, in the Memorial Chapel of Tifton’s First Baptist Church. Dr. Wayne Roe will officiate with burial to follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. His nephew, Glenn Painter, Dr. Jim Butler, Norton Futch, Edsel Harrell, H. C. Medford, Herbert Womack and Billy Wood will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 1, 2010, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.
Mr. Matthews was born on March 5, 1925 in Tift County and was the son of Wallace Franklin Matthews, Sr. and Wyolene Fincher Matthews, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Ivadell Thomasson Matthews and one brother, Wallace F. Matthews, Jr. He was retired as an accountant with the Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station for approximately 25 years. He also worked with the Bank of Tifton and C&S Bank for 17 years. He was a member of Tifton’s First Baptist Church and the Ferry Lake Fishing Club, where he served as secretary/treasurer for many years. He was a lifetime resident of Tifton.
Mr. Matthews is survived by his wife, Joan Fawley Goff Matthews of Tifton; one niece and one nephew.
