Homer Livermore Gowing, 83, of Mattapoisett passed away peacefully on December 25. Homer was born on May 8, 1926 in Boston, MA. to Henry and Muriel (Livermore) Gowing and grew up in Newton. Homer graduated from Kimball Union Academy in 1944 and enlisted in the US Navy serving in the Pacific Theater aboard USS LST 522.
After the war, Homer enrolled at Middlebury College and graduated with the class of 1951. After graduation, he married Jane Towers and went to work for Arthur D. Little & Co. They lived in greater Boston for several years and spent one year in Nassau where Homer worked for St. Regis Paper Co. After returning to the States, they settled in Wilbraham, MA where Homer spent 25 years at US Envelope/Westvaco in the marketing division. All through the years, he and his family spent summers in Mattapoisett and after Homer’s retirement, he and Jane moved year round to Mattapoisett.
Homer is survived by his daughter Patricia (Gowing) Richardson and her husband Philip of Simsbury, CT, two sons; Stephen Gowing and his wife Marilyn of Canton, MA, James Gowing and his wife Sara of Lower Gwynedd, PA, six grandchildren; Sarah Richardson, Anne Richardson, Mark Richardson, Kristen Gowing, Amy Gowing and Stephanie Gowing and by his brother John Seward and his wife Marsha of Beverly Farms, MA.
Homer’s greatest legacy is the family he raised with Jane and the love they all share for each other and for Mattapoisett.
Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mattapoisett Land Trust, P.O. Box 31, Mattapoisett, MA 02739.
