Obituary

Leonard P. McDonnell, 85, of New Bedford died December 25, 2009 at New Bedford Health Care Center.
He was the husband of the late Mary M. (Malone) McDonnell.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Leonard M. and Florence (Reddy) McDonnell, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. McDonnell was formerly employed as an assistant treasurer with New Bedford Institution For Savings for many years until his retirement. Prior to that, he was a salesman for C.F. Rickett's of Cranston, RI. Leonard worked as a professional musician for many years as a member of the Bud Lilly Orchestra playing many weddings and at the Harbor Beach Club, Twin Silos and the Silver Gull.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 74th AAA Brigade. Mr. McDonnell was the recipient of the European-African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with 3 Bronze Battle Stars, 1 Overseas Service Bar and the World War II Victory Medal.
Survivors include his son, Leonard M. McDonnell of Mattapoisett; 2 daughters, Kathleen J. Lowney of Mattapoisett and Joanne McDonnell; 2 sisters, Maureen Hathaway of New Bedford and Jean Silver of Fairhaven; 2 granddaughters, Kayla and Meghan; 2 great-grandchildren, Jack and Mary; several nieces and nephews.
His private Funeral Service was held Monday, December 28th in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in his memory may be made to Southcoast Hospice, 200 Mill Rd., Fairhaven, MA 02719.
