Fred T. “Fliver” Mather, Sr. 92 years, of Avon died Tuesday December 22, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family after a lengthy illness. He was the devoted husband for 71 years of Violet (Matta) Mather. Fred was born and raised in Brockton a son of the late Thomas and Mary Mather and lived in Brockton until moving to Avon in 1971. He was the proprietor of Mather’s Service Station in Brockton until retiring in 1983. Previous he had worked at Fore River Shipyard and Brockton shoe factories.
Fred was a member of the Brockton Towing Association and the Lebanese American National Club where he was a past president. He had been a longtime and actively involved member of St. Theresa Maronite Catholic Church.
Fred enjoyed fishing, trips to casinos and summers spent in Onset. His love of family was great. Fred and his wife gave their children a strong foundation. His journey of life has come to an end but his journey with Christ continues. The love of his life and his Rock of Gibraltar was his devoted wife, Violet. They shared a bond of love and compassion for 71 years, something to be admired. He will be remembered by family and friends as a man with a strong will, a heart of gold and much love to share.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his children Mary Ann Donohue of West Bridgewater; Fred T. Mather, Jr. of Brockton; Linda L. Caffrey and her husband Jack of West Bridgewater; Gail Mather of Avon; Michael C. Mather and his wife Paula of Brockton and Thomas G. Mather of Brockton. He was the father of the late Sandra Mather. He was the brother of Jeannette Axsom of Brockton; George “Young” Mather of Idaho and the late Bernice Mather, George “Mitchie” Mather and Phillip Mather. Fred leaves 15 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and a sister-in-law Meredith Mather of Brockton.
Funeral from the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton Tuesday at 9am. The Service of the Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Theresa Maronite Catholic Church, 343 N. Main Street, Brockton at 10am. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours Monday 3-7pm with the Service of Incense at 6pm.
