George J. Bettencourt, 85, of New Bedford died December 17, 2009 at New Bedford Health Care Center.
He was the husband of the late Evelyn F. (Daley) Bettencourt.
Born in Acushnet, the son of the late Antone and Josephine (Marshall) Bettencourt, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.
Mr. Bettencourt was formerly employed as a welding teacher for Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School for many years until his retirement.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and he enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include a son, George Bettencourt, Jr. of Florida; a daughter, Evelyn Sylvia of Dartmouth; 3 brothers, Jerald Bettencourt, Joseph Bettencourt and Robert Bettencourt; 2 sisters, Rose Curran and Margaret DeTerra.
He was the brother of the late Antone Bettencourt, John Bettencourt and Mildred Pierce.
His private Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, December 23rd in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial followed in the Massachusetts National Cemetery.
