Lt. Col. (Ret) Philip O’Connell McCarthy, Jr. 90, died peacefully on Tues. Dec. 22nd at his home in Salem where he had resided for 44 years.
Phil was born in Charlestown, MA, was educated in Somerville, MA and graduated from Somerville High School, class of 1937.
He was honored to have served with the US Army during World War II and Korea. Phil was in the US forces in Japan, the 82nd Airborne and as base commander of Fort Banks in Winthrop, MA. He retired out of Fort Devens’ 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne).
Phil was a long term member of the Salem Lion’s Club, Mary Queen of Peace Church and VFW Memorial Post #8546. His major enjoyments were his wife and family, golf, more golf and a lifelong love of the New England seacoast.

Calling hours will be held Monday, Dec. 28th from 11 AM-1 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1 PM at the Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main Street, Salem, NH. Cremation Will Follow. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations in Phil’s memory be made to Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St., Lawrence, MA 01843.
