Joan M. Hawko, age 88, of Medford passed away unexpectedly at her home on December 19th. She was the beloved wife of the late William J. Hawko. Born in Cambridge, she was the daughter of the late James and Gertrude (Woods) Jordan.
Mrs. Hawko was a life-long resident of Medford. She was always willing to help others and served as the Chairperson of the Medford Heart Fund and the Medford Cancer Fund. She was the former State Commander of the Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. and served as a warden for ward 1 for many years. Mrs. Hawko also worked for a number of years as a clerk for Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Mostly devoted to her loving family, Mrs. Hawko enjoyed spending time with her children and especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to her late husband and parents, Mrs. Hawko is preceded in death by her son, the late Kenneth W. Hawko, and brother, the late Henry Jordan. She is survived by her children, Gertrude Peckham and her husband Jeff of Texas, Philip Hawko of Medford, Stephen Hawko and his wife Barbara of Quincy. She was the loving grandmother of Sandra Flanagan, Michael Peckham, Stephen Hawko Jr., Matthew Hawko and Bridget Hawko. She is also survived by her loving great grandchildren, Margaret, Grace and Owen Flanagan. She is further survived by her sisters, Ruth Lee of Florida, Retah Moynihan of Lynn, Jane Cadigan of Waltham and one brother, James Jordan of Florida.
Funeral services will be held from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., MEDFORD Wednesday at 8 a.m. followed by a funeral mass celebrated in Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St., Malden, at 9 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Tuesday 3 thru 7. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. It has been requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Joan’s memory to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Division Of Development - Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place West, Floor 6, Brookline, MA 02445-9924.
