Obituary

Edith Elizabeth (Kelly) Sullivan of Mystic peacefully passed away Saturday morning, December 19th, 2009.

Edith was born in Watertown, New York, on March 28, 1917 to Edith Elizabeth (Carley) Kelly and William James Kelly. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to Bridgeport. She was classically trained in music and ballet and entertained all with her piano playing. Her strong love of the sea along with her indefatigable courage and sense of adventure were hallmarks of her life.

She began her working career in Newport, Rhode Island, where she met her husband, Daniel Patrick Sullivan (deceased in April 1969 after a long illness). They lived in Argentia, Newfoundland, (at the Air Patrol Station, shortly after World War II) then in Groton, finally settling in Mystic.

She was a longtime resident of Mystic, a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church, and a member of the Daughters of Isabella. Edith was also a member of the Mystic Aquarium, National Geographic and the World Wildlife Foundation. She was an ardent lover of animals, fine literature, her large family and all things Irish.

After raising four children and the loss of her husband, she worked for the United States Postal Service in Mystic until her retirement. She enjoyed her retirement with music, her family, and a keen passion for world economics and politics. We will miss her greatly.

She leaves her four children, Daniel P. Sullivan of Vernon and his special friend, Barbara A. Yard of Manchester, Barbara L. Walsh and her husband Dennis M. Walsh of Mystic, Sharon F. Lizak and her husband Paul F. Lizak of Simsbury, and Jane E. Crogle and her husband Alan G. Crogle of Mystic; her grandchildren, Tara M. Sullivan of East Hartford, Shannon E. Sullivan of Manchester, Kathleen K. Kuczma and her husband Kevin P. Kuczma of New Fairfield, Seamus B. Walsh of New York State, Paul F. Lizak II of Simsbury, Michael P. Dyer and his wife Gretchen Dyer of Hawaii and William G. Crogle of Mystic; her great-grandchildren Christopher D. Rich of Manchester, Brendan A. Kuczma of New Fairfield, Kieran M. Kuczma of New Fairfield, Connor J. Kuczma of New Fairfield, and Lauren E. Botkin of Groton.

The family extends its sincere thanks to the staff of Academy Point and Mary Elizabeth Nursing Center for their warm and caring attention.
