Holland Carter Smith, 74, of Goose Creek, husband of Brenda Ackerman Smith died Monday, December 14, 2009 at Heartland of Charleston, Hanahan.
A memorial service will be held Friday, December 18, 2009 at 10 o’clock at St. James United Methodist Church, Goose Creek. Burial will be held at a later date at Little Swamp United Methodist Church, Smoaks, SC. A gathering of family and friends will be held Thursday, December 17, 2009 from 6 until 8 o’clock at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, Summerville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. James United Methodist Church, 512 St. James Avenue, Goose Creek, SC or Ferndale Baptist Church, 4870 Piedmont Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29406.
Mr. Smith was born February 8, 1935 in Smoaks, son of the late Dan Franklin Smith and Dora Lee George Smith. He was a graduate of Ehrhardt High School and attended business college. He was a 27 year employee of the Charleston Naval Shipyard and the Naval Supply Center until his retirement in 1988. Most recently he was employed by Southeastern Spine Institute as a medical transcriptionist. He enjoyed gardening, bird watching, hunting, fishing and being surrounded by his grandchildren, other family members and special friends. A legacy that he left all who knew him was the gift of laughter. He loved his four black labs: Holly, Tiger, Scooby and Belle. He was a member of St. James United Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are: 2 daughters and 1 son: Cynthia Smith Davenport and her husband James Gregory Davenport of Centreville, Virginia, Pamela Smith Negron and her husband Victor Vincent Negron of Goose Creek and Billy G. Baker of Summerville. Grandchildren: Caleb, Aaron and Rachael Davenport all of Centreville, Virginia and Joshua Long of Goose Creek. He was predeceased by his daughter, brothers and sisters: Dana Smith, Frank Smith, Dan Smith, Mary Waltz and Ruth George.
