Also survived by several loving aunts, uncles and many cousins. Funeral from the McLaughlin – Dello Russo Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St., Woburn, Friday, at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Charles Church, 280 Main St. Woburn, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Ralph L. Garvey Jr., age 62, past Director of Veteran Services for the City of Woburn, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family early Monday morning. He was the beloved husband of 33 years to Marylee (Clark) Garvey. Born in Woburn he was the cherished son of Lillian B. (Rockwood) Garvey of Woburn and the late Ralph L. Garvey Sr.
Ralph was a life-long resident of Woburn and graduated from Woburn High School with the class of 1965. Following high school he attended Boston State College and shortly after he began working for the New England Telephone Co. He enlisted in the United States Army where he proudly and honorably served for three years from 1968 to 1971 receiving a number of commendations and medals. Ralph participated in two tours of duty in Vietnam. When Ralph returned home he went back to work with New England Telephone as a design engineer and retired in 2003 following 36 years of employment.
In 2007 he was appointed by the Hon. Mayor Thomas L. McLaughlin as the Director of Veteran Services for the City of Woburn. Do to his declining health he was forced to resign after only two years of service. Ralph was always very active with many different Veteran Associations and causes as well as being involved in the community with the Woburn Host Lions Club which he was the past president of and a faithful and dedicated member for over thirty-five years. Ralph was the Past Commander of the Disabled American Veteran Assoc. Chapter 88 of Woburn, the Past Commander of the Woburn United Veterans Council and former member of the Woburn Police Auxiliary. Mostly devoted to his large and extended family, Ralph enjoyed and cherished time spent with them and will be greatly missed. In his leisure time he was an avid reader and enjoyed being outdoors fishing.
In addition to his beloved wife and mother, Ralph is survived by his two sons, Shaun W. Garvey and James R. Garvey both of Woburn.
