92, passed away at Beverly Hospital. He was the husband of the late Alma (Glenn) Purington.
Born in Ipswich on Feb. 22, 1917, he was the son of the late Frank and Elizabeth (O’Brien) Purington. While growing-up he resided in areas on the North Shore and Maine. John and his wife resided in Manchester-by-the-Sea for over twenty years while raising their family, before settling in Danvers. Mr. Purington served his country during WWII with the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Thomas E. Power Council No. 1505, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Charles W. Davis Post #2359 in Danvers and the American Legion, Post 113 in Manchester-by-the-Sea. John was employed with GTE, Sylvania for over thirty five years and a Quarter Century Member.
He is survived by a son John F. Purington of Swampscott and a daughter and son-in-law Donna and Bill Rogers of Saugus, three grandchildren, Wendy Despres, Dana Rogers and Kerri Harris and five great grandchildren, Sean and Lexi Rogers, Brooke Harris, Colby and Camdyn Despres and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister Mary Janes.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9AM on Wed., Dec. 16, 2009 in St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, Conant St., Danvers. Burial will follow in Annunciation Cemetery, Hobart St., Danvers. Vst. hrs are Tues. 4-8PM at C.R. Lyons & Sons, Funeral Directors, 28 Elm St., Danvers. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in John’s name to the VNA Care Network and Hospice, 5 Federal St., Danvers MA 01923.
