Obituary

William T. Sutherland, age 77, of Woburn passed away unexpectedly December 9th at his home. He was the beloved husband of the late Ethel S. (Murphy) Sutherland. Born in Somerville and raised in Cambridge he was the son of the late John J. and Mary (Johnson) Sutherland.

"Bill" as he was affectionately known by to his family and friends, honorably served as a Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was inducted into the Army in December of 1952 and actively served until November of 1954. Following his service in the Army, Bill returned home and attended Wentworth Institute of Technology where he studied engineering. Soon after he began working for IBM as a Field Engineer and eventually retired following more than thirty years as a dedicated employee. Mostly devoted to his loving family, Bill enjoyed being with his children and especially enjoyed time spent with his cherished grandchildren. He had a strong faith and drew great comfort from his catholic beliefs. He was an active parishioner of St. Barbara Church in Woburn for many years.
In his leisure time he also enjoyed traveling to Foxwoods Casino with family and friends.

In addition to his late wife and parents, Bill is preceded in death by his brothers, John and Thomas Sutherland. He is survived by his loving daughters, Jeanne Sutherland-Murphy and her husband Mark of Canton, Mary Pienta and her husband Brian of Billerica, Ann Mundy and her husband Erik of Millis. He was the loving Grampy of Sarah and Anna Pienta, Will, Brad and James Murphy, Erin and Caroline Mundy. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary "Peg" Segreve of Weston, Catherine "Kay" Moran of Arlington, Florence Freitas of Hudson, and Carol Chafe of Danvers.

Funeral services will be held from the McLaughlin-Dello Russo Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St. WOBURN, Wednesday, at 9 AM. Followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Barbara Church, 138 Cambridge Rd., Woburn, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Tuesday 4 thru 8. Services will conclude with burial at Cambridge City Cemetery. It has been requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made in Bill's name to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
