MALDEN: Roland D. Love, 68, formerly of Gloucester, died unexpectedly on December 7, 2009 at his residence.
Born in Ipswich on December 12, 1940, he was the son of the late George P. Love and Lillian G. (Jacobs) Nelson.
Roland was a graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1958. He went on to attend the Berkley School of Music. Along with his brother, Donald P. Love, he sang professionally in clubs in Boston, where they became good friends with the McGuire Sisters.
Roland had worked for many years at the former Sterling Drug Store on Main Street. He had also worked as a bartender and waiter at numerous establishments including the Hawthorne by the Sea, King’s Grant Inn, Howard Johnson’s and most recently Bickford’s in Somerville.
His family will remember him as not only a brother and brother-in-law, but a dear friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his sisters and brother-in-law, Gloria F. and William E. Newman of Gloucester and Geraldine G. “Kitty” (Love) Tom of Niantic, CT, his cats, Mr. Kelly and Lucas, as well as many cousins and good friends. He was also predeceased by his brother, Donald P. Love, sister, Patricia Ann Love and his stepfather, Morris E. Nelson.
His funeral service will be held on Monday in the West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational Church, 488 Essex Ave., Gloucester at 10:30 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday afternoon in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle St., Gloucester from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Cape Ann Animal Aid, 260 Main St., Gloucester, MA 01930 or the Animal Rescue Fund, P. O. Box 238, Waterford, CT 06385-0238. Interment will be held in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
