MARY L. CHRISTENSEN
GROTON- Mary (Lewis) Christensen, age 80, of Drozdyk Dr., Windham Falls Estates, formerly of Mystic, died Tuesday at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Christensen was born in Mystic on June 10, 1923 the daughter of George B. Lewis Sr. and Anna (Hudson) Burrows. Raised in Mystic, she attended local schools and was a 1941 graduate of Fitch Sr. High School. She was also a 1945 graduate of Connecticut College for Women.
ary enjoyed a long teaching career, first as an English teacher at the former Williams Memorial Institute and later at Fitch Senior High School before retiring in 1982. She was a published poet and a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, a teachers’ honorary society. After retirement, Mary volunteered teaching English in Florida and Connecticut.
She was married to Walter C. Christensen at St. Patrick Church, Mystic on July 31, 1948. Mr. Christensen died June 25, 1990.
Mary leaves her children, Anne D. Connery of Wakefield, RI, Lynn C. Kluepfel of Hoboken, NJ, Christy L. Christensen of Groton, Betzy C. Farnsworth of Mystic; and Walter C. Christensen Jr. of Cambridge, MA; and 9 grandchildren. She was predeceased by 2 brothers, George B. Lewis Jr. and Elwood H. Lewis.
A Graveside Funeral Service will be conducted at Elm Grove Cemetery, Rte. 27, Mystic on Tuesday at 10:00am. There are no visiting hours. Donations in her memory may be made to a cancer research charity of the donor’s choice.
