Olive M. (Hewey) Huggan, 92 of Ledyard, CT, beloved wife of the late Roderick C. Huggan passed away Wednesday, December 9, 2009.
Born February 1, 1917 in New London, CT, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Olive (Pray) Hewey. She was raised in Noank, CT. Olive was a woman of extreme beauty and compassion, who loved and lived life with a great deal of enthusiasm. A woman of uncompromising values, profanity and racial slurs were never allowed in her house.
Raised a Baptist, she became a member of the Unitarian Church of Norwich, CT. During World War 2, she worked at the Electric Boat Co. in Groton CT. At wars end she met her love, the late Roderick C. Huggan, a Navy veteran of the Pacific Campaign . She was instrumental in what today is called PTSD in bringing her beloved back to reality. Olive was proud to be the wife of a Navy officer and like most Navy wives spent many months and days taking care of her children and home while her husband was at sea. Over her kitchen hung a plaque: Navy wife, The hardest job in the Navy! It could be said that if her legacy were told it would state that she was the most unselfish of persons. She gave everything to her family and friends and expected nothing in return.
Olive is survived by her son Roderick H. Huggan and his wife Patricia of Canterbury, daughter Lynn Tessier and her husband Frank of Mystic, son Robert Huggan and his fiancee Faith Caldwell of East Hampton, CT as well as 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She was predeceased by her son Andrew C. Huggan, sisters Minnie, Angelina, Rose and brother Charles.
The family would like to thank the staff of Mystic Manor and Beacon Hospice for the loving care they gave.
Her family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Wednesday, December 16th from 5-7pm.
Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
