Obituary

Helen M. McIntyre, 94, of New Bedford and Mattapoisett passed away Tuesday December 8, 2009 at home with family at her bedside. Helen was born July 27, 1915 in Arlington, MA the daughter of the late Edward K. and Margaret A. (Meehan) McIntyre.
Helen was a 1932 graduate of New Bedford High School. She was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.
Helen was employed as a junior clerk when the Division of Employment Security was first established in 1938. She remained with them until joining the U.S. Navy in 1944 and was stationed at Shoemaker Naval Base in Oakland, California. She was discharged as World War II came to an end in 1945 with the rank of Yeoman Third Class (Temporary). She returned to New Bedford and resumed working for the employment service remaining with them for 42 years. Over the years Helen attended Continuing Education Classes offered by the Division at Providence College and Clark University and she took advantage of promotional exams and advanced in position, retiring as Southeast Regional Director of the Division of Employment Security in 1980.
Helen was a member of the Quota Club serving as president for a term. While a member she particularly enjoyed attending their international convention in Australia along with another member of Quota. Helen was a volunteer with SCORE helping those starting new businesses in the area. She also was a member of the Pierpoint Glass Collector's Society and participated in their cup plate program.
Helen summered at Crescent Beach in Mattapoisett for over 50 years where she and her sister Edith enjoyed entertaining family members. She traveled throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. These travel memories provided many happy hours of reminisces in her later years.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews and their families who will miss her dearly.
Helen was predeceased by two brothers, Mark H. McIntyre and Edward K. McIntyre and two sisters, Mary F. Muldoon and Edith C. McIntyre.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford Saturday, December 12th at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 9 AM. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visiting hours Friday, December 11th from 4-7 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford.
