TEWKSBURY - Joseph K. Meuse, age 81, a veteran of both the Navy and Army, died Tuesday morning, December 8, at Lowell General Hospital, surrounded by his family, following a lengthy illness. He was the beloved husband of Lorraine A. (Mansfield) Meuse, with whom he had celebrated a 58th wedding anniversary this past October 7th.
He was born in Wakefield, January 26, 1928, a son of the late Frederick and Theresa (Meuse) Meuse, raised in Wakefield, and graduated from Wakefield High School. He had lived in Tewksbury since 1956.
Upon graduation he enlisted into the U.S. Navy during WWII, honorably discharged as a Seaman First Class and awarded the Victory Medal. He re-enlisted into the Army National Guard, and served in Company E of the 182nd Infantry Division, based in Wakefield, honorably discharged in 1955 at the rank of Sergeant.
His career was as a pressman, working for Murray Brothers Printing, which became Courier Citizen Company, from where he retired after 35 years in the industry.
He was a communicant of St. William's Church, and a member of Fr. Coppens Council 4336, Knights of Columbus in Tewksbury. His family described him as a kind and loving father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family.
He also loved the Red Sox, the Patriots, cooking Sunday dinner and scratching lottery tickets with his lucky coin.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Diane Fortier and her husband Richard Jr. of Barnstead, NH, Debra Leborgne of Lawrence, Cynthia Cunningham and her husband Timothy of Dunstable; a son, Thomas Meuse and his wife Deborah (Hurst) of Tyngsboro; four grandchildren, Courtney and Kristin Cunningham, Natalie (Fortier) Malcolm, and Richard Fortier III, two great grandchildren, Billy and Haley; two sisters, Mary Paiva of the Greenwood section of Wakefield, Jeannette Muise of Melrose; a sister-in-law, Lorrainne Meuse of Hudson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also father-in-law of the late Barry Leborgne, and brother of the late Roy, Paul, and Lester Meuse, and Louise Bagge.
His Funeral Mass was held Friday, Dec. 11, in St. William's Church, Tewksbury. Burial with Navy honors followed at St. Mary's Cemetery in North Tewksbury.
