Obituary

Dorothy C. Maxson, 100, died peacefully at the Fairview Manor in Groton, Ct. on Tuesday, December 8, 2009. She was the loving wife of C. DeLoss Maxson, Jr who predeceased her in 1971.

Born in Stonington, Ct on March 18, 1909, she was the daughter of the late George C. and Minnie (Burdick) Clark.

She graduated from Stonington High School, was a leader of the Girl Scouts, Past President of Westerly Hospital Aide, where she helped organize the Hospitality Shop, and an active member of the Connecticut River Valley Embroiderers Guild of America, Inc. where she served as Treasurer for many years. She traveled to 22 countries, studying embroidery, was voted stitcher of the year with the EGA, Inc. and was a teacher of embroidery. She also loved painting, gardening, playing bridge and reading. She was active in the Central Baptist Church, served as a Trustee as well as many other committees. She was involved with the recreation of the Avondale Chapel. She was a 50 year member of the Deborah Chapter OES.

Dorothy is survived by a son, Charles C. Maxson and his wife Peg of Mystic, a daughter Joan M, Grinnell and her husband Leroy A. of Charlestown, RI, six grandchildren, Marnie Willoughby of Pine Bluffs, WY, Clark Maxson of Old Saybrook Ct., Gail Musante of Mystic, Ct, Lynn Sweet of South Kingstown RI, Stephen and Scott Grinnell both of Charlestown RI and twelve great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 18, 2009 at 11 AM at the Central Baptist Church, 16 Elm Street, Westerly, RI. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers a memorial gift may be made to Avondale Chapel, c/o Central Baptist Church, 16 Elm Street, Westerly, RI 02891 or Fairview Manor, 235 Lestertown Road, Groton, CT 06340.
