Mildred E. “Emilia” (Bara) Dean, 91, a retired Major in the Army Nurse Corps passed away on December 2, 2009 in Plymouth. She served in hospitals in Massachusetts; Brooklyn, NY; the Philippine Islands and with the Army of Occupation in Japan for two years. Other assignments included Chief Nurse on the Hospital Ship Ernestine Koranda en route to Shanghai, China, Korea and Germany. Born in Lawrence, MA she was a graduate of the Lawrence General Hospital School of Nursing. Wife of the late Philip L. Dean, she is survived by her sister Lillian Winston, nephews and their wives, Douglas and Kathy Winston, Brian and Vanessa Winston, Gary and Melissa Winston, great nephews and nieces and cousins Helen, Patrick, Irene, Stella and Sara of Lawrence. She was a member of the Military Officers Assoc, the AARP, the Council on Aging, the RSVP of Plymouth, Plymouth Women’s League at St. Peter’s Church and a library volunteer. She loved animals, gardening, traveling, golfing, tai chi and was an avid reader of mystery novels. Services will be private.
