Lloyd A. Hagstrom, 84, of Millbury Healthcare Center, formerly of Worcester, a retired hearing aid executive, died on August 27 at UMass Memorial Hospital after an illness.
He leaves a son, Wayne Hagstrom, of North Hills, CA; a daughter, Lynne Orsted of Worcester; and his grandchildren: Amanda Orsted of Cambridge, MA; Lisa Orsted of Easthampton, MA; Rayne Hagstrom and Erik Hagstrom, both of North Hills, CA. His sister, Eleanor (Hagstrom) Abrahamson, predeceased him. Mr. Hagstrom was born in Worcester, son of Carl A. Hagstrom and Elin (Aspengren) Hagstrom and grew up in South Worcester.
He was an outstanding athlete, excelling in baseball and basketball. He graduated from South High School in 1938 and from Worcester Academy in 1939, where he was starting guard and leading scorer for the basketball team. He received a business degree from Becker College, where he was a member of Phi Theta Pi Honor Fraternity. He played a season of minor league baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals and played semi-pro baseball for many local teams, including Maloney’s Playground, New England Hobos, Wherever Roofers, Bay State Abrasives, Narcus Brothers and the New Ideas. Mr Hagstrom was an owner of Beltone Hearing Aids and had offices in Worcester and Fitchburg. He later worked for Maico and Zenith Hearing Aids. He also worked as a stock broker and was one of the first put and call option brokers in the New England area.
A private graveside service for the family was held. A memorial service was held at Salem Covenant Church, 215 Mountain Street East, Worcester, MA on September 3rd. Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Covenant Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
