Obituary

Shirley Jeanne Hausman, 89, known locally as "Jeanne", died peacefully at her home in Noank, on Dec. 4, 2009.

She was born on June 19, 1920, in St. Louis, Mo. Her father, an accountant, frequently traveled long distances to his workplaces, and the family moved a few times as he sought employment. Her early childhood was spent in Independence, Kans. The family then moved to Tulsa, Okla., where Jeanne graduated from high school in 1938.

In 1942, Jeanne received her BA degree in English from Washington University in St. Louis; in 1953, she received an MA degree in English from Tulsa University in Tulsa, Okla.; and in 1963, she received an MBA degree from New York University in New York City.

From 1943 to 1945, after initial training at Smith College, Jeanne worked in communications with the U.S. Navy, rising to the rank of Lieutenant, JG.

After World War II, Jeanne moved to New York City, where she worked at the Chemical Bank for 30 years.

After many years of pleasant visits to Noank, in the summer of 1991, Jeanne moved there with her former boss at the bank, Muriel F. Steele, and remained in Noank for the rest of her life.

Jeanne was a Trustee of the Noank Historical Society and an active participant in its Tuesday Club, regularly providing coffee for its meetings. In addition, she enjoyed traveling and playing bridge and golf. She loved her cats, some of whom were hers originally and others were strays to which she gave a home.

She is survived by her four nieces and nephews, Christine L. H. Wuesthoff of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Patricia A. H. de Heer of Atlanta, Ga., John M. Hausman of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and William P. Hausman of Carmichael, Calif.

She was predeceased by her closest relative, her brother, John Edgar Hausman of Carmichael, Calif.

A Time of Remembrance with refreshments will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at her residence at 17 Main Street, in Noank.
